Blur the background of a photo

Blur the background of a photo and keep the person, pet or product in focus: an AI model finds the subject, and you choose how strong the blur is and how soft the edges are.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add a photoDrop a portrait, a pet or a product photo.
  2. Let the AI find the subjectThe first time, the model downloads once.
  3. Set the blur and downloadChoose blur strength and edge softness, then download.

Portrait mode for any photo

Phones blur the background in portrait mode to make the subject stand out, the way a camera with a large lens does. This tool does the same afterwards, on a photo you already have: a busy street, a messy room or a crowded event becomes a soft wash of color and the eye goes straight to the person or object.

It uses the same AI model as the Background Remover. The model looks at the whole picture, separates the main subject from its surroundings and returns a mask with soft transitions, including around hair.

Natural looking blur

A simple blur would smear the subject's colors into the background and leave a glowing outline. Here the blur is built only from background pixels, so a red jacket does not leave a red halo. Areas fully hidden behind the subject are filled from the surrounding background.

Blur strength scales with the size of the photo, so the look in the preview matches the downloaded file. Edge softness blends the subject into the blur; raise it if the cutout line is visible, lower it for crisp product edges.

Good to know

The blur is even across the background. A real lens blurs distant things more than near ones, so very deep scenes can look slightly flat. Photos with one clear subject work best; with several people the model may keep only the most prominent ones sharp.

The model is about 98 MB and downloads only the first time. After that it works from your browser's storage, even without a connection.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model runs in your browser, so the photo stays on your device.

Why does the first photo take longer?

The AI model (about 98 MB) downloads once. With a graphics card the next photos take a second or two; on the processor it takes longer.

Part of the subject is blurred. Why?

The model did not see it as part of the main subject, which happens with objects held far away or several people. A tighter crop around the subject helps.

Is the download in full resolution?

Yes. Photos up to 6000 pixels on the long side keep their size; larger ones are reduced to that.

Is it free?

Yes, with no watermark and no sign up.

Which browsers work?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. A graphics card makes it much faster.
