Microphone test

Find out in seconds whether your microphone works. Allow access, speak, and watch the level meter react, then record a short clip to hear how you sound.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Allow the microphonePress Start and allow access when your browser asks.
  2. SpeakTalk normally. The meter and waveform move when sound arrives.
  3. Listen backRecord 5 seconds and play it back to hear how you sound.

Before a call or a recording

Check your microphone before a job interview on Zoom, a Teams meeting, a game session on Discord or a podcast recording. If the meter stays flat while you talk, the browser is getting no sound: the wrong input may be selected, the microphone may be muted with a hardware switch, or another app may be using it.

The test turns off echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain, so you hear the raw signal of the microphone. Video call apps usually switch these on, which is why you may sound a little different there.

Reading the meter

Normal speech at a usual distance shows around -30 to -12 dB. If you stay near -50 dB, move closer or raise the input level in your system sound settings. If the bar turns red and the meter shows a red border, the signal is clipping and will sound distorted; lower the level or move back a little.

Frequently asked questions

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

No. The live sound is only measured in your browser. The test recording stays in the page memory and disappears when you leave.

Why does the meter not move?

Check that the right microphone is selected, that it is not muted, and that no other app is using it. On Windows and macOS, the browser also needs microphone permission in the privacy settings.

Which microphone is used?

The one your system uses by default. Pick another from the Device list after starting the test.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in current mobile browsers. Allow microphone access when asked.
