How WPM is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where one word counts as five characters including spaces. This test counts only correctly typed words, so mistakes lower the score; that is the net WPM most tests and employers use. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong, and shows how fast your fingers move.
Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct. A wrong letter that you fix still counts as a mistake, because it cost you time.
What is a good typing speed?
Most people type between 35 and 45 WPM. 50 to 60 WPM is fast enough for most office work, and from 70 WPM you are faster than nine out of ten people. Accuracy matters more than speed: above 95 percent your speed will rise with practice, below that you lose time correcting.
If you look at the keyboard while typing, the touch typing lessons teach you to type with all ten fingers.
