How the cutout is made
A neural network trained to separate the main subject from its surroundings looks at your photo and draws a precise mask, including hair, fur and fine edges. The mask is applied at the full resolution of your image, so nothing is downscaled.
The model runs entirely in your browser. On the first use it downloads once (about 98 MB) and is then kept by your browser, so later photos start right away and work even offline. With a modern graphics card a photo takes one to three seconds; on older devices it can take half a minute.
Private by design
Most background removers upload your photo to a server. Here the image never leaves your device, which matters for portraits, ID photos and unreleased products. There are no credits, no watermark and no size limit.
