Dead pixel test

Fill the whole screen with one color at a time and look for dots that do not match. Check a new monitor, laptop, TV or phone within the return period.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Clean the screenWipe off dust so it is not mistaken for a pixel.
  2. Start the testThe screen fills with black. Click or press space for the next color.
  3. Look closelyScan each color for dots that stay different. Esc ends the test.

Dead, stuck or hot?

A dead pixel stays black on every color and is easiest to see on white. A stuck pixel stays red, green or blue and shows up on black or on the other colors. A hot pixel stays white and stands out on black. Check every color, because each type hides on some of them.

On black you can also see backlight bleed: lighter patches near the edges of LCD screens. Some bleed is normal, strong bleed in a dark room may be worth a return.

Test within the return period

Many shops and manufacturers accept returns for a new screen only within a few weeks, and some have a pixel policy that allows a few faulty pixels. Run the test on the first day. We do not offer the flashing pixel fixers found on other sites: their rapid flashing can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a dead pixel from dust?

Dust moves when you wipe the screen and often looks blurry. A faulty pixel is a sharp dot that stays in place.

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Sometimes a stuck pixel recovers by itself or after gentle pressure with a soft cloth while the screen is off. A dead pixel usually cannot be fixed.

Why is there no pixel fixer?

Pixel fixers flash colors very quickly, which can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. We prefer to leave it out.

Does it work on a phone or TV?

Yes. Open the page in the browser of the device; on phones, turn the brightness up.
