How to organize a Secret Santa

To organize a Secret Santa, collect the names of everyone taking part, agree on a budget and a date, draw names so that each person gives one gift to someone else, and let every participant see only their own name. Online, the draw also takes care of the awkward rules: nobody draws themselves, partners never draw each other, and if the rules make a draw impossible you find out straight away. The free generator on this page does all of this in your browser, without sign up or email addresses.

How Secret Santa works

Every participant draws the name of one other participant and buys a gift for that person. Nobody knows who has their name until the gifts are handed over, and sometimes not even then. The result is that everyone gives one gift and receives one, which keeps costs low and makes it possible to put real thought into a single present.

The same idea goes by many names: Kris Kringle, Secret Santa, Wichteln in Germany, amigo invisible in Spain and amigo secreto in Latin America, and Père Noël secret in France. It also works outside Christmas, for birthdays, office farewells or any group celebration; the gift exchange version of the generator uses neutral wording for that.

Before the draw: the details to agree on

Most Secret Santa problems come from details nobody said out loud. Settle these first and write them into the note that every participant sees with their name.

  • Budget: a clear number, set at what the person with the smallest budget is comfortable spending. Many offices pick a modest round amount.
  • Date and place: when the gifts are exchanged, and whether people bring them or post them.
  • Theme or wish lists: for example something handmade, a book, or three things each person likes.
  • Who takes part: only people who said yes. A gift exchange nobody wanted creates more stress than joy.
  • Anonymous or revealed: decide whether people say who their Santa was at the end.

Rules for couples, families and last year's pairs

Drawing slips from a hat cannot avoid unwanted pairs; an online draw can. In the generator, add a rule for every pair that should not be matched. Never paired with works in both directions and suits partners, siblings and people who live together, who will buy each other presents anyway. Does not draw works in one direction, which is perfect for avoiding last year's pairs: if Anna gave to Ben last year, add Anna does not draw Ben, and Ben can still draw Anna.

The option Two people never draw each other prevents swaps, where Anna gives to Ben and Ben gives to Anna. Some groups like the chain effect without swaps; with only a few participants it can make a draw impossible.

Too many rules can leave no valid result. A simple example: with three people, if two of them are a couple who may not draw each other, both must draw the third person, which is not possible. The generator checks this before drawing and tells you which name has nobody left, instead of silently breaking a rule.

Is the draw fair?

A fair draw gives every valid result the same chance. The generator uses your browser's secure random number generator, shuffles all names and keeps the result only if it respects every rule, then repeats until it finds one. That is exactly what a careful organizer would do with a hat: put the slips back when someone draws their own name. When the rules are so strict that this would take too long, it switches to a step by step search that still never breaks a rule.

Nothing is sent to a server. The names are stored only in the browser where you made the draw, so the list is still there next year.

Revealing names without spoiling the surprise

In one room, use Pass the phone. The organizer hands the phone to each person in turn; they tap their own name, check that nobody is watching, press Show, and then Hide and pass on. Names that have already been seen are marked, so you can see who is still missing.

For a group in different places, use Private links. Every person gets a link that greets them by name and shows their result behind a Show button. The result is encrypted inside the link, so it cannot be read from the link text, and it is not stored on any server. Be honest with your group about the limits: anyone who opens a link can see what is in it, including the organizer who sends them. If the organizer also takes part and wants to be surprised, they should send each link without opening it, or let someone outside the group send them.

Send each link privately, for example in a direct message, never in the group chat. If someone loses their link, the organizer can copy it again from the list, as long as the draw is still open in their browser.

Ideas for a smooth exchange

  • Draw names at least two weeks before the exchange, so there is time to order online.
  • Put the budget, date and theme in the note, so they appear with every name.
  • For remote teams, set the date a week before a video call and ask people to post gifts.
  • Keep a few spare small gifts in case someone forgets or a new colleague joins late.
  • If someone drops out after the draw, draw again with the new list rather than patching it by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do Secret Santa with couples?

Add a rule with never paired with for each couple. The generator makes sure the two never draw each other in either direction.

What is a good Secret Santa budget?

One that everyone in the group can afford without thinking twice. A clear amount works better than a range, and the note in the generator shows it to everyone.

Can the organizer take part without knowing the results?

Yes, with Pass the phone, as long as they only look at their own name. With Private links the organizer could open the links, so they should send them without opening them.

What happens if the rules make a draw impossible?

The generator tells you before drawing and names the person who has nobody left to draw. Remove a rule or add participants and draw again.

Do participants need an email address or an account?

No. There is no sign up and no email. Results are shown on the same phone or through links you send yourself.
