Speaker and headphone test

Check that the left and right sides of your speakers or headphones are connected correctly, find out how low and high they can play, and generate a test tone.

How it works

  1. Turn the volume downStart at a low volume, especially with headphones.
  2. Test the channelsPress Left, Both and Right and check where the sound comes from.
  3. Try the sweepPlay the sweep to hear where your speakers start and stop.

Left and right in the right place

Swapped channels are more common than you think: speakers placed on the wrong side, a cable plugged in the other way, earbuds worn the wrong way round. Press Left and the melody should come only from the left side, Right only from the right. If both sides play the same, your device may be set to mono in the accessibility settings.

Bluetooth headphones sometimes switch to a low quality mode while the microphone is in use, which can make the test sound thin. That is normal for Bluetooth.

Bass, treble and test tones

The sweep rises from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in 15 seconds. Small laptop speakers usually start somewhere above 150 Hz, good headphones reach far lower. Most adults no longer hear above 15 to 17 kHz, which is normal. The tone generator plays any frequency until you stop it, useful for tuning, finding rattles or testing a subwoofer.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I hear the sound on both sides?

Your system may be set to mono audio, or the headphones may be mono. Check the sound or accessibility settings.

Why can I not hear the highest frequencies?

Hearing at high frequencies drops with age; above 15 kHz is hard for most adults. Small speakers also cannot play very low notes.

Is the test safe for my ears and speakers?

Keep the volume low, especially with headphones and high or square wave tones, and raise it slowly.

Is anything downloaded?

No. All sounds are generated in your browser.
