Patterns that make the chart easy to learn
Every number is built from its thousands, hundreds, tens and units, written one after the other. Each place uses the same pattern of nine forms: for units I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX; for tens X, XX, XXX, XL, L, LX, LXX, LXXX, XC; for hundreds C, CC, CCC, CD, D, DC, DCC, DCCC, CM. So 1,984 is M + CM + LXXX + IV = MCMLXXXIV.
Once you know the three rows of nine, you can write any number up to 3,999 without a chart. The quick buttons create the most used ranges, and the list follows the standard subtractive form throughout.
Use in class and at work
Teachers print 1 to 100 for practice sheets, editors need chapter and volume numbers, and designers look up years for film credits or building dates. The CSV download opens in Excel, Google Sheets and Numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How many rows can a chart have?
Up to 1,000 rows at a time. For a larger range, make several charts.
What is 100 in Roman numerals?
C. 50 is L, 500 is D and 1,000 is M.
What is the largest Roman numeral?
With the standard letters it is MMMCMXCIX, which is 3,999. With the overline the converter goes up to 3,999,999.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Roman system has no zero and no negative numbers or fractions, so the tool tells you when a number cannot be written.
Why is 4 written as IV and not IIII?
The standard rule allows a letter at most three times in a row and uses subtraction instead. IIII appears on many clocks for design reasons, but IV is the standard form.
How do I write 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: MM is 2,000, XX is 20 and VI is 6.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Conversion happens in your browser, and the page also works offline after the first visit.
