Tap tempo BPM counter

Tap along to a song with the mouse, a finger or the T key and this BPM counter shows its tempo after a few beats, averaged over your last eight taps. Then start the metronome at the same tempo with one click.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Set the tempoDrag the slider, type the BPM or tap the tempo.
  2. Choose the meterPick a time signature, subdivision and click sound.
  3. Press StartPlay along. Space starts and stops, the arrow keys change the tempo.

How to count BPM by tapping

Play the song and tap the large pad on every beat, the way you would tap your foot. After the second tap the counter shows a first value; it becomes accurate after six to eight taps, because the time between taps is averaged and small slips cancel out. The line under the number shows how many taps were counted, the average distance in milliseconds and whether your taps are steady.

Stop for more than two seconds to start over, or press Reset. If you tap every second beat or twice per beat, the result is half or double the usual figure: a song at 140 BPM tapped on every other beat shows 70.

From the counter to the metronome

Use this tempo copies the result to the metronome below, rounded to a whole BPM. That is useful for practising a song at its real speed, setting the tempo of a DAW project, choosing music for running or dancing, or checking that a band keeps the tempo of the recording. For a song file, the BPM finder page estimates the tempo from the audio itself.

Frequently asked questions

How many taps do I need?

Four taps give a rough value, eight a good one. The counter always averages the last eight taps, so it follows you if the tempo changes.

Can I tap with the keyboard?

Yes, press T, or focus the pad and press the space bar or Enter. Keyboard taps are usually more even than mouse clicks.

Why does my result jump between two values?

Uneven taps change the average. Tap a few more beats, listening to the drums rather than the melody, and the value settles.

Is this metronome accurate?

Yes. Clicks are scheduled on the audio clock ahead of time instead of being triggered by page timers, so they land on the exact sample. Your speakers or Bluetooth headphones can add a constant delay, but the spacing between clicks stays exact.

Does it keep playing in another tab?

Yes. Timing runs in a separate background thread, so the metronome keeps a steady beat while you read music in another tab. On phones, keep the browser in the foreground; the screen stays on while it plays.

What does BPM mean?

Beats per minute: 60 BPM is one click per second, 120 BPM two per second. Most pop songs are between 90 and 130 BPM.

Which keyboard shortcuts are there?

Space starts and stops, T taps the tempo, the up and down arrow keys change the tempo by 1 BPM, with Shift by 5 BPM.

Can I share my settings?

Yes. Tempo, time signature, subdivision, sound and trainer settings are kept in the page address. Share with these settings copies a link that opens the metronome the same way.

Is it free and does it need an app?

It is free, needs no sign-up or app and runs entirely in your browser.
