Standard ukulele tuning: G C E A

Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles share the same tuning: G4, C4, E4 and A4, from the string closest to your chin to the one closest to the floor. The G string is higher than the C string, which is called re-entrant tuning and gives the ukulele its bright, typical sound. The target frequencies are 392, 261.6, 329.6 and 440 Hz.

Some players use a low G string, an octave lower (G3). The tuner shows the note name in that case too, but the string button expects the high G, so switch to Chromatic and tune it to G3.

Getting a stable reading

Ukulele strings are nylon or fluorocarbon and stretch a lot when they are new, so expect to retune often during the first week. Pluck gently with the thumb, hold the ukulele about an arm's length from the microphone and mute the other strings with your hand.

Baritone ukuleles are tuned D G B E like the top four guitar strings: use the guitar preset and tune the four highest strings, or the chromatic mode.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ukulele's G string higher than the C string?

That is normal: standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant, with the G string tuned above the C string. Only low G sets use a thicker G string tuned an octave lower.

Can I tune a ukulele to A D F# B?

Yes. This older tuning is a whole tone higher. Use the Chromatic mode and tune the strings to A4, D4, F#4 and B4.

Does the tuner work for a banjolele or guitalele?

A banjolele uses ukulele tuning, so the ukulele preset fits. A guitalele is tuned A D G C E A: use Chromatic mode.

Is my microphone recorded?

No. The sound is analysed in your browser a few dozen times per second and then discarded. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere, and the microphone turns off when you press Stop, leave the page or switch to another tab.

How accurate is the tuner?

With a clean tone it reads within a fraction of a cent. Real strings contain overtones that are slightly sharp, so readings can move by a few cents while a note rings; aim for the needle to settle in the green zone and you are well tuned.

Why does the tuner show the wrong octave or note?

Loud overtones or background noise can confuse any tuner for a moment. Play a single string, mute the others and move closer to the microphone. With an instrument preset you can also lock the tuner to one string.

What does drop D mean?

In drop D the lowest guitar string is tuned a whole tone down from E to D, the other strings stay as in standard tuning. It gives a deeper sound and power chords with one finger. Choose Guitar, drop D in the instrument list.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current browsers on Android and iPhone. Allow the microphone when asked; on iPhone, tuning works best with the phone close to the instrument.

Is the tuner free?

Yes, free without sign-up or ads inside the tool. It also works without an internet connection once the page has loaded.
