Remove a password from a PDF

Save a copy of a password protected PDF that opens without the password, once you have typed the password you know. PDFs that open freely but block printing or copying are unlocked right away.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add the PDFsDrop the protected PDF files. Files that only limit printing or copying are unlocked at once.
  2. Type the passwordEnter the password you use to open the file and press Unlock. If it is wrong, correct it and try again.
  3. DownloadDownload the unlocked copies one by one or as a ZIP. Your originals stay unchanged.

You need to know the password

This tool removes a password you already know, so you do not have to type it every time or so you can send the file to someone without sending the password too. It does not guess, test or crack passwords. If you do not know the password of a PDF, ask the person who sent it.

Both the open password and the permissions password work. With either one, the tool decrypts the whole file and saves a copy without any protection.

PDFs that only limit printing or copying

Some PDFs open without a password but do not let you print, copy text or fill in forms. These files are encrypted with an empty open password and a list of limits. The tool removes the limits right away, without asking for a password, so you can print or copy from documents you are allowed to use, such as your own statements or invoices.

What stays the same

Pages, text, fonts, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept exactly as they are; only the encryption is removed. A digital signature in the file becomes invalid, because removing the protection changes the file. The work happens in your browser: the PDF and the password are never uploaded, and the password is not stored anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove a password I do not know?

No. We cannot remove a password you do not know, and the tool does not try to guess it. You need the open or permissions password of the file.

Are my PDF and password uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. The password is only kept in the page while you use it.

Why does it say the password is wrong?

Passwords are case sensitive, so check capital letters and the keyboard language. Copy and paste can also add a space at the end. Correct it and press Unlock again.

My PDF opens but I cannot print or copy. Do I need a password?

No. Add the file and the limits are removed right away. Only do this with documents you are allowed to use.

Which kinds of PDF protection are supported?

Password protection with AES-256, AES-128 and the older RC4 encryption. Files protected with a certificate instead of a password cannot be opened here.

Is it free?

Yes, free and without an account, also on phones.
