Binary to text converter

Paste binary code and read the text it stands for. Bytes can be separated by spaces, commas or nothing at all, and characters from any language are decoded as UTF-8.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Type the numberEnter the value in the input box. Spaces and underscores between digits are ignored.
  2. See the resultThe converted value appears right away, together with the other common bases.
  3. Copy itPress Copy next to the result you need.

Decoding binary messages

Paste groups of eight bits, such as 01001000 01101001, and the converter turns each byte into its value and decodes the bytes as UTF-8 text, here Hi. If there are no spaces, the bits are read in blocks of eight; if the number of bits is not a multiple of eight, the tool tells you instead of guessing.

When a byte sequence is not valid UTF-8, for example because a byte is missing in the middle of a character, you get a clear message instead of strange symbols. The same works with hex codes such as 48 69 or with decimal codes like 72, 105: choose the code base above the input.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get an error about UTF-8?

Some bytes do not form a valid character, often because a byte was lost or changed while copying. Check that every group has eight bits and that none are missing.

How do I convert decimal to binary by hand?

Divide the number by 2 again and again and write down the remainders, then read them from the last to the first. For 13: 13, 6, 3, 1 give remainders 1, 0, 1, 1, so 13 is 1101.

Why does 0.1 never end in binary?

Because 1/10 cannot be written as a sum of powers of two, just as 1/3 never ends in decimal. The repeating part 0011 is shown in brackets.

What is the largest number I can convert?

Numbers with up to 20,000 digits are accepted. The results are exact, there is no rounding.
