Hash generator

Get the MD5 and SHA hashes of any text or file at once, as you type. Paste an expected value to check whether a download is intact.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Enter text or choose a fileHashes update as you type or as soon as the file is read.
  2. Add a key for HMACOptional: turn on HMAC and enter the secret key.
  3. ComparePaste the published checksum to see if it matches.

All common hashes at once

A hash is a short fingerprint of data: the same input always gives the same value, and the smallest change gives a completely different one. Developers use them to compare files, cache content, sign API requests and store data integrity values. This tool calculates five algorithms in one go, using the Web Crypto API of your browser for the SHA family and a built in implementation for MD5.

Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accented letters, other alphabets and emoji give the same hash as in most programming languages.

HMAC and checksums

HMAC combines a secret key with the data, as used by webhooks from Stripe, GitHub and many other services. Turn it on, enter the key and compare the result with the signature header you received. For files, paste the checksum from the download page and the tool tells you which algorithm matches.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are read and hashed in your browser.

Should I use MD5 for passwords?

No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes. Use them only for checksums. Passwords need slow hashes like Argon2 or bcrypt.

Why does my hash differ from another tool?

Usually because of a trailing newline or a different text encoding. This tool hashes exactly what is in the box, as UTF-8.

How large can files be?

Several hundred megabytes work on most devices; the limit is the memory of your browser.
