Christmas around the world
Most countries celebrate Christmas Day on 25 December, and that is where this countdown ends. In many places, including Germany, Poland, Scandinavia and much of Latin America, families open presents on Christmas Eve, 24 December. Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar, for example in Russia, Serbia and Ethiopia, celebrate on 7 January. To count to one of those days, change the date in the fields below; the link you share keeps your choice.
Because the countdown uses your own time zone, Christmas arrives at your midnight, not at some other country's. Kiribati and New Zealand reach it first, Hawaii and American Samoa last.
For kids and classrooms
Children often count the sleeps until Christmas, which is the same as the days on the calendar shown below the countdown. An advent calendar starts on 1 December with 24 doors. In a classroom, switch to full screen in the last days before the holidays so everyone can see the numbers shrink.
Frequently asked questions
When does the Christmas countdown reach zero?
At midnight at the start of 25 December in your time zone. The page then shows a greeting for the whole day and switches to next year after midnight.
Can I count down to Christmas Eve instead?
Yes. Set the date to 24 December and the time to the moment you open presents, then share the link with your family.
How do I share my countdown?
Press Share with these settings under the tool. The copied link contains the name, date, time and time zone, so anyone who opens it sees the same countdown.
Does it handle time zones and daylight saving time?
Yes. The moment is calculated in the chosen time zone with its daylight saving rules, and people in other zones see the same countdown plus their own local time.
Will a sound play when the countdown ends?
Turn on Play a sound at the end and keep the tab open. Browsers allow sound only after you click once on the page.
Is my event uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The name and date are only in the link you share and in your browser's storage.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no sign up and no limit on the number of countdowns.
