Midnight does not arrive everywhere at once

New Year travels around the globe in about 26 hours. The first to celebrate are the islands of Kiribati at UTC+14, followed by New Zealand, Australia and Asia; the last inhabited places are American Samoa and Niue at UTC-11. This page counts to midnight in your own time zone. To follow another city, for example to call family in Sydney at their midnight, choose its time zone below, and the countdown shows when that is in your time.

Some cultures celebrate the new year on other dates, such as the Lunar New Year in January or February. Set the date by hand for those; the link keeps it.

For the party

Connect a laptop to the TV, open this page and press Full screen: the screen stays on, and the large numbers can be read across the room. Turn on Play a sound at the end and click once on the page, so your browser allows the sound. The countdown follows your device clock, which is normally synced to an internet time server and accurate to a fraction of a second.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the New Year countdown?

It follows your device clock. Phones and computers that set their time automatically are usually accurate to well under a second.

Can I count down to New Year in another country?

Yes. Pick that country's city in Time zone, and the page shows when midnight arrives there and what time that is for you.

How do I share my countdown?

Press Share with these settings under the tool. The copied link contains the name, date, time and time zone, so anyone who opens it sees the same countdown.

Does it handle time zones and daylight saving time?

Yes. The moment is calculated in the chosen time zone with its daylight saving rules, and people in other zones see the same countdown plus their own local time.

Will a sound play when the countdown ends?

Turn on Play a sound at the end and keep the tab open. Browsers allow sound only after you click once on the page.

Is my event uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The name and date are only in the link you share and in your browser's storage.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign up and no limit on the number of countdowns.
