FPS test

This FPS test counts how many frames per second your browser actually draws, and shows the time of each frame, dropped frames and stutter. It is a quick way to check whether animations and scrolling on this device are smooth.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Let it runThe counter needs a few seconds to collect enough frames.
  2. Compare FPS and HzThe big number is frames per second, the refresh rate is shown next to it.
  3. Check for dropsRed bars in the graph are frames that took too long.

FPS and refresh rate are not the same

Refresh rate is how often the screen can show a new picture. FPS, frames per second, is how many new pictures are actually produced. A browser normally aims for one frame per refresh, so on a healthy system the two match. When the device is busy, FPS drops below the refresh rate and you see stutter. On this page the big number is the measured FPS over the last few seconds, and the refresh rate appears in the first box.

For smooth motion the frame time matters as much as the average: 60 FPS with a few 50 ms frames feels worse than a steady 50 FPS. Watch the graph; even bars mean even motion.

When the FPS is lower than expected

Close heavy tabs and pause video playing in the background.

Turn on hardware acceleration in the browser settings if it is off.

On laptops, plug in the charger and choose a performance power mode.

Test in a private window to rule out extensions.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a game FPS test?

No. It measures the frame rate of your browser, which is limited to your screen's refresh rate. Game frame rates depend on the game and its settings.

What is a good FPS?

The same number as your refresh rate, for example 60 on a 60 Hz screen or 144 on a 144 Hz screen, with few or no dropped frames.

How do I know if my monitor is really running at 144 Hz?

Open this page in a browser on that monitor and wait a few seconds. If it shows 144, the screen, cable and settings are working at that rate. If it shows 60, check the display settings and the cable.

Why does the result change a little?

Frame timing always varies by a fraction of a millisecond. The measured value, for example 143.98 Hz, is matched to the nearest common rate when it is close enough.

Can a browser show more than my refresh rate?

No. Browsers draw at most one frame per screen refresh, so this page shows the screen's rate, not your graphics card's maximum frame rate in games.

Does the test send anything from my computer?

No. The measurement runs entirely in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
