Convert GIF to WebM
Convert an animated GIF to a WebM video for your website. WebM is usually much smaller than a GIF made from video, and every frame keeps its timing.
Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works
Add the GIFDrop one or more animated GIFs on the page or choose them from your device.
Check the settingsWebM is already selected. Choose how often the animation repeats and a background color if you need one.
DownloadSave each WebM video on its own or all of them at once as a ZIP file.
WebM for web pages
WebM is the open video format of the web. Every current browser plays it, and a muted video with the autoplay, loop and playsinline attributes behaves just like a GIF on a page while loading a fraction of the data. That helps page speed scores and visitors on mobile data.
The converter uses VP9 when your browser can encode it and VP8 otherwise. Each frame keeps its duration from the GIF, and the size stays the same apart from one extra row or column on odd sizes.
When MP4 is the better choice
Some phone gallery apps, older Windows programs and presentation software do not open WebM. If you want to send the file to someone or use it outside a browser, choose MP4 instead: it is a little larger but plays everywhere. Many sites offer both, WebM first and MP4 as a fallback.
About GIF
GIF is an image format that can hold an animation. It plays everywhere, including email and old chat apps, but with only 256 colors per frame and weak compression animated GIFs get large quickly.
About WebM
WebM is an open video format made for the web. With VP9 it gives small files, and all current browsers play it, but some phones' gallery apps and older programs do not.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebM smaller than MP4?
Not always. VP9 is the more efficient codec on paper, but browser encoders differ, and in our tests MP4 was often the smaller file. Choose WebM if your site already serves WebM, otherwise MP4 is the safer choice.
Can WebM keep the transparency of my GIF?
Not here. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose.
Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?
No. The GIF is decoded and the video is encoded in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on the number of files and no watermark.
Does the video have sound?
No. GIFs have no sound, so the video has only a picture track.
Why is the video so much smaller than the GIF?
Video codecs store only the changes between frames and use far better compression than GIF. In our test, a 4.5 MB GIF made from photo-like frames became an MP4 of 187 KB. Small GIFs with flat colors shrink much less.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes. After the page has loaded once, the conversion keeps working offline because everything happens in your browser.
My browser says it cannot create the video. What can I do?
Video encoding needs a current browser. Try the latest Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, or switch between MP4 and WebM.
