GUIDs for Microsoft tools

A GUID (globally unique identifier) is the same 128 bit value as a UUID, written the way Microsoft tools expect. This page starts with uppercase letters and braces, as in {3F2504E0-4F89-41D3-9A0C-0305E82C3301}, the format of the Windows registry, COM classes and many configuration files.

For C# use Guid.Parse on the plain form, for SQL Server uniqueidentifier columns the form without braces. Turn the options on or off to match what your code needs, and generate a whole batch for seed data or installers.

Random and private

These are version 4 GUIDs from the secure random generator of your browser, identical in quality to Guid.NewGuid(). Nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as Guid.NewGuid()?

Yes in format and randomness: both create version 4 identifiers with 122 random bits.

Are these UUIDs unique?

In practice yes. v4 has 122 random bits; v7 has 74 random bits per millisecond plus a counter.

What is the difference between UUID and GUID?

GUID is Microsoft's name for the same thing. They are often written in uppercase and in braces.

Can I see when a UUID was created?

For versions 1, 6 and 7, yes. Paste it into the decoder.

Are the IDs sent anywhere?

No. They are generated in your browser.
