MD5 hash generator

Get the MD5 hash of text or a file instantly. MD5 is shown first, with SHA hashes below in case you need them too.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Enter text or choose a fileThe hash appears at the top as you type.
  2. Copy the valueCopy it with one click, in lowercase or uppercase.
  3. Compare if neededPaste an expected value to check it.

Where MD5 is still used

MD5 produces a 128 bit value, written as 32 hexadecimal characters. It is no longer safe against deliberate attacks, but it is still everywhere as a quick checksum: download pages list MD5 sums, S3 and many storage services use it as an ETag, older APIs sign requests with it, and databases use it to detect duplicate rows.

Our MD5 runs in your browser, so you can check large files without uploading them. Paste the published value in the compare field to see at once whether your copy matches.

Need something stronger?

For new projects use SHA-256 or SHA-512, which are listed right below. They are calculated at the same time, so there is nothing extra to do.

Frequently asked questions

Is MD5 secure?

Not for security. Collisions can be created on purpose. It is fine for detecting accidental corruption.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are read and hashed in your browser.

Should I use MD5 for passwords?

No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes. Use them only for checksums. Passwords need slow hashes like Argon2 or bcrypt.

Why does my hash differ from another tool?

Usually because of a trailing newline or a different text encoding. This tool hashes exactly what is in the box, as UTF-8.

How large can files be?

Several hundred megabytes work on most devices; the limit is the memory of your browser.
