How the payment is calculated

Most personal loans, car loans and mortgages are repaid in equal monthly installments. Each payment covers the interest on the remaining balance and pays off part of the loan; at the start most of it is interest, towards the end almost all of it is principal. The calculator uses the standard annuity formula with the annual rate divided by 12.

The schedule lists every payment with its interest, principal and remaining balance, grouped by year for a quick overview or by month in full detail. Download it as CSV to open in Excel or Google Sheets.

Compare offers

A lower rate or a shorter term both reduce the total interest, but a shorter term raises the monthly payment. Try a few combinations to find a payment that fits your budget. Fees, insurance and taxes are not included; banks state them in the annual percentage rate (APR), which you can enter as the rate for a closer comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Which interest rate should I enter?

The annual nominal rate. To include fees, use the annual percentage rate (APR) from the offer.

Does it work with my currency?

Yes. Amounts are plain numbers, so any currency works.

Why is most of the first payment interest?

Interest is charged on the remaining balance, which is highest at the start.

Is this an offer from a bank?

No. It is an estimate for fixed rate loans; the bank's offer may differ because of fees and rounding.
