Make a video square (1:1)

Make any video square, 1:1, by cropping the part you want or by fitting the whole video inside a square with a blurred, black, white or colored background.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Open the videoDrop a video; the aspect ratio for this page is already selected.
  2. Place the frameDrag the frame over the part to keep, or choose Fit with background to keep the whole picture.
  3. SavePress Crop video and download the result.

Square video in practice

A square video takes more room than a wide one in a phone feed and looks the same on every device, which makes it a safe choice for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and product pages. Crop takes the largest square from the middle; drag it left or right to choose the part that matters. Fit with background keeps the whole picture: a white background is common for product videos, a blurred one for travel and people.

From a 1920×1080 video, Crop gives 1080×1080 pixels and Fit with background gives 1920×1920. For a lighter file, compress the result afterwards with the video compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for a square video?

1080×1080 pixels is common and sharp on phones. Cropping a Full HD video gives exactly that size.

Can I add white bars instead of cropping?

Yes. Choose Fit with background and then White as the background.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed in your browser and never leaves your device. There is no watermark.

How do I make a horizontal video vertical without cutting anything off?

Choose 9:16 and Fit with background. The whole video stays visible in the middle, with a blurred copy of it above and below.

Does cropping reduce the quality?

The picture is encoded again at high quality, so the difference is hard to see. Cropping does not add detail: a small part of a video enlarged on a big screen looks softer.

Can the crop follow a moving subject?

No, the frame stays in one place for the whole video. Check several moments with the Preview frame slider and place the frame so the subject stays inside.

Is the sound kept?

Yes. The sound is copied, or converted to AAC when the MP4 or MOV result needs it.
