Barcode scanner

Scan a barcode with your phone or laptop camera, without installing an app. Hold the code inside the frame and the number appears with its type as soon as it is recognized.

Free and private. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Add the barcodeStart the camera, drop a photo or paste a screenshot. Every barcode in the picture is read.
  2. Check the resultYou see the code, its type and whether the check digit is correct.
  3. Copy or countCopy the code or add it to the count list, then download the list as CSV or Excel.

No app, no sign-up

Press Use camera, allow access once and point the back camera of your phone at the barcode. On devices with several cameras you can switch between them, and phones that support it keep the picture in focus automatically.

In Single code mode the camera stops as soon as a code is found and shows a snapshot with the result. In Count list mode it keeps running so you can scan one item after another.

Tips for a quick read

Long barcodes such as Code 128 on shipping labels read best when the whole code fits the wide frame. Turn on the beep to hear when a code is read, so you do not have to look at the screen. The camera turns off when you switch to another tab.

About EAN-13

EAN-13 is the 13 digit product barcode used on retail goods worldwide. The last digit is a check digit calculated from the other twelve, which lets readers catch most misreads.

About TXT

The decoded value is shown as plain text that you can copy: digits for product codes, letters and digits for Code 128 and Code 39, and any text or link for QR and Data Matrix.

Frequently asked questions

The camera does not start. What can I do?

Check that camera access is allowed for this site in your browser settings and that no other app is using the camera. You can always add a photo of the barcode instead.

Are my photos, camera picture or lists uploaded?

No. Barcodes are decoded in your browser and the count list is stored only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Which barcode types can it read?

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar, ITF and ITF-14, GS1 DataBar, QR, Micro QR, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417. You do not need to choose the type.

Can it tell me the product name or price?

No. A barcode only contains a number. The product name and price live in the database of the shop or the brand, which this tool does not query. You can paste the number into a search engine to find the product.

What does the GS1 prefix mean?

The first digits show which national GS1 organization gave the company its number range. It is not the country where the product was made: a German brand can make products in China and keep a German prefix.

The camera does not read the code. What helps?

Hold the barcode flat and fully inside the frame, about 15 to 25 cm from the camera, with good light and no glare. Laptop webcams often cannot focus up close; take a photo with your phone and drop the image instead.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After the page has been opened once, reading images, the camera and the count list work without an internet connection.
