How to type the degree symbol
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0176 on the number pad, or press Windows key and period to open the symbol panel. On a Mac, press Option, Shift and 8. On iPhone and Android, press and hold the zero key on the keyboard and pick the small circle. In HTML write ° or °, and in Word type B0 and press Alt+X.
When typing is not possible, copying it from here is the quickest way.
Writing temperatures and angles correctly
Style guides write temperatures with a space before the degree sign and the unit right after it: 21 °C or 70 °F, although 21°C is common too. Angles take no space: a 90° angle. Coordinates use degrees, minutes and seconds with the degree sign, the prime and the double prime: 48°51′24″ N. The prime and double prime are in the math section.
Do not use the masculine ordinal sign (º) or a superscript o instead of the degree sign. They look similar in some fonts, but they are different characters and search, screen readers and conversions treat them differently.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Alt code for the degree symbol?
Alt+0176 on the Windows number pad. On a Mac use Option+Shift+8.
Should I use the ℃ character or ° followed by C?
Use ° followed by C. The single ℃ character exists for compatibility with old East Asian fonts and is not recommended in normal text.
How do I copy a symbol?
Click or tap it. It is copied to the clipboard right away and added to the text box at the top, so you can also collect several symbols and copy them together.
Why does a symbol look different after pasting?
Each app draws symbols with its own font. The character is the same, only its design changes. If you see an empty box, the font in that app has no drawing for that symbol.
Why are there no emoji?
This page is for text symbols that work like letters. Some of them can turn into emoji on phones, so they are copied with a marker that asks for the plain text style.
Can I search in my own language?
Yes. Names are in the language of the page. You can also paste a symbol into the search box or search by its code, such as 2192.
Is anything sent or saved?
Nothing is sent anywhere. Your recently copied symbols are saved only in this browser and you can clear them at any time.
