  2. Read the resultThe answer appears as you type, with an explanation.
  3. Try other questionsFive other percentage calculations are below.

From old to new

Percentage change compares the difference with the starting value: (new minus old) divided by old, times 100. A price rising from 80 to 100 is a 25 percent increase; falling from 100 to 80 is a 20 percent decrease. The direction matters because the starting value is different.

Use it for price changes, salary raises, sales growth from one month to the next, website traffic, exam scores or weight progress. The result says clearly whether the change is an increase or a decrease, so there is no confusion about the sign.

Percent or percentage points?

When a rate changes from 4 percent to 5 percent, that is 1 percentage point, but a 25 percent increase of the rate. Enter 4 and 5 here to get the relative change.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the decrease from 100 to 80 only 20%?

Because the change of 20 is compared with the starting value 100. From 80 to 100 it is compared with 80, which gives 25%.

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. 15% of 80 is 80 × 15 / 100 = 12.

How is percentage change calculated?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100.

How do I find the price before tax?

Divide the price including tax by 1 plus the tax rate, for example 120 / 1.2 = 100 for 20% tax.

Can I use a comma as decimal separator?

Yes. Both 12,5 and 12.5 work.
