When PNG is the better choice
PNG stores every pixel exactly, so text, lines and interface elements in a screen recording stay crisp, and a frame you edit and save again does not lose quality each time. The price is size: a Full HD PNG frame is often 2 to 4 MB, several times larger than a JPG.
Keep in mind that the video itself was compressed when it was recorded. PNG keeps the frame exactly as the video shows it, but it cannot bring back detail the video compression removed. For photos of people and places JPG is usually enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNG better quality than JPG for video frames?
PNG adds no further loss, which matters for text and for editing. For ordinary video scenes the difference to a high quality JPG is hard to see.
Why are the PNG files so large?
PNG is lossless. Choose a smaller image size or JPG if you need lighter files.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The frames are made in your browser and the video never leaves your device.
Are the pictures full resolution?
Yes. With Original size, each picture has the full resolution of the video, for example 1920×1080 for a Full HD video.
How do I save one specific frame?
Choose Current frame, pause the video where you want it and press Save this frame.
How many frames can I extract at once?
Up to 500 per run. Choose a longer interval or a fixed number for long videos.
Why is a frame blurry?
Fast motion is blurred in the video itself, because the camera's shutter was open while things moved. Try a frame a little earlier or later.
