Why square images keep a store tidy

Most Shopify themes show products in a grid. When photos have different shapes, the theme either crops them or leaves rows of uneven height, and the store looks unfinished. Square images around 2048 × 2048 avoid both problems and stay sharp on large and high density screens and in the product zoom.

Shopify does not require a white background, but white is the safest choice for a collection page: it matches almost any theme and lets the products, not the backgrounds, set the mood.

Choosing the fill for your theme

This page starts with an 80 percent fill, a little more white than the marketplace presets. Theme cards often add rounded corners, sale badges or a second image on hover, and the extra margin keeps the product clear of them.

Whatever value you pick, use it for the whole collection. When you add new products later, open this page again with the same settings and they will match the old ones.

Does Shopify require a white background?

No. It is a design choice, but white keeps a collection consistent and works with almost every theme.

Will 2048 pixel images slow my store down?

Shopify creates smaller copies for each screen size, so visitors do not download the full image on a product grid. The JPG files from this tool are also kept at a sensible size.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The AI model and all image work run in your browser, and your photos stay on your device.

Is it free?

Yes. There are no credits, no watermark and no limit on the number of photos.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the AI model has been downloaded on the first use. Your browser keeps it, and with background removal switched off no model is needed at all.

Which sizes are available?

Amazon 2000 × 2000, Shopify 2048 × 2048, Etsy 2700 × 2025 (4:3), eBay 1600 × 1600 and a general 1200 × 1200 square. You can change how much of the frame the product fills from 50 to 95 percent.

Why does my product look soft?

The photo was smaller than the canvas and had to be enlarged. The row warns you when this happens. Shoot closer or at a higher resolution and try again.

Can I keep a shadow under the product?

No. The tool keeps only the product on a plain white background, which is what most marketplaces ask for on the main image.
