Split an Excel file into multiple files

Split one Excel sheet into several smaller workbooks, either by row count or with one file per value of a column. Each file gets the header row, a bold frozen header and readable column widths.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add your filesDrop CSV or Excel (.xlsx) files on the page or choose them. For merging, add every file you want to combine.
  2. Choose howTo split, pick rows per file, number of files or a column. To merge, choose whether columns match by name or by position.
  3. DownloadDownload each part, all parts as a ZIP, or the merged file. Nothing leaves your device.

From one long sheet to many workbooks

Large Excel sheets are slow to open and hard to share. Add the .xlsx file, choose Rows per file or Number of files, and each part is saved as its own workbook with the same header. If the workbook has several sheets, choose the sheet to split from the Sheet list.

Numbers stay numbers so sums and filters keep working, while columns with leading zeros, such as barcodes or postal codes, stay text. The last calculated values of formulas are copied; the formulas themselves are not.

A workbook for every team or region

With Column value, every distinct value in the chosen column becomes its own file, for example sales_North.xlsx and sales_South.xlsx. The sheet inside each file is named after the value. If someone needs CSV instead, set Save as to CSV and the parts are written as UTF-8 CSV files.

About Excel

XLSX is the Excel workbook format. A workbook can hold several sheets and up to 1,048,576 rows per sheet, and it opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split old .xls files?

No. Open the file in Excel or LibreOffice, save it as .xlsx and add that file instead.

Are formatting and formulas kept?

The values are kept, including the results of formulas. Colors, merged cells, charts and the formulas themselves are not copied to the new files.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Splitting and merging happen in your browser. Your files are not sent to any server, which matters for customer and order data.

How large can the file be?

CSV files are read in pieces, so files of 100 MB and more work on a normal computer. Excel files are read whole, so very large workbooks need more memory; saving them as CSV first is faster.

Does every part keep the header row?

Yes. With First row is header turned on, the header is written at the top of every part. Turn it off if your file has no header.

Will leading zeros and barcodes be lost?

No. Values are copied exactly as they are in the file. When you save as Excel, columns with leading zeros and long numbers stay text so no digits disappear.

What happens when merged files have different columns?

With matching by name, every column from every file is kept. Rows from a file that lacks a column get an empty cell there. Choose By position if your files have no headers or different header names for the same data.

Can I merge sheets of one Excel workbook?

Yes. Add the workbook and keep Use every sheet of Excel files turned on. Each sheet is treated like a separate file and all rows end up in one table.

Is there a row limit?

CSV has no limit. An Excel sheet holds at most 1,048,576 rows, so save very large results as CSV or split them into several Excel files.
