Lorem ipsum in short
The standard passage begins Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. It looks like Latin, and most of its words are Latin, but in this form it does not mean anything. That is the point: a reader's eye sees text of a realistic shape and length without being pulled into reading it.
Placeholder text of this kind is also called dummy text, filler text or greeking. It is used in website mockups, app prototypes, print layouts, presentation templates, theme demos and anywhere the design is ready before the content.

The text comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The source passage, in Book 1, sections 32 and 33, contains the words Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, roughly: nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain.
The familiar version cuts and rearranges that passage. Lorem is the end of the word dolorem, split at a line or page break, and many words were dropped, shuffled or altered over time. The connection to Cicero was traced in the 1980s by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
You will often read that printers have used lorem ipsum since the 1500s. That claim is widely repeated but not well documented. What is documented is its spread in the 1960s through Letraset dry transfer sheets, which included the text for layout work, and in the 1980s through desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker, which shipped with it in templates.
Why designers use placeholder text
- It shows how real text will flow: line length, paragraph shape, rag on the right edge, and how headings and body text work together.
- It keeps reviews focused on layout. When a mockup contains real sentences, people start editing the wording instead of judging the design.
- It is ready immediately. Designers can build pages before writers, translators or clients deliver content.
- It is neutral. Nobody confuses it with final copy, as long as it is clearly not English or the language of the site.
How much lorem ipsum to generate
Use roughly the amount of text the finished page will have. A layout tested with two lines of filler where the real product description has eight will break the moment content arrives. Ask the content owner for target lengths, or use typical values like these:
- The generator above creates up to 200 paragraphs or sentences, or up to 5000 words at once, and shows the word and character count under the result.
- Test both extremes: the shortest and the longest text a field might hold, such as a one word product name and a 70 character one.
| Element | Typical length | Setting in the tool |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | 4 to 10 words | Words: 6 |
| Card or teaser text | 15 to 30 words | Sentences: 2 |
| Product description | 50 to 150 words | Paragraphs: 1 or 2 |
| Short blog post | 300 to 600 words | Paragraphs: 5 to 8 |
| Long article | 1000 to 2000 words | Words: 1500 |
| Email body | 50 to 200 words | Paragraphs: 2 or 3 |
Other quick ways to get filler text
Microsoft Word has a built in shortcut: type =lorem() at the start of an empty paragraph and press Enter to insert lorem ipsum paragraphs. =lorem(3,5) gives three paragraphs of five sentences each, and =rand() inserts Word's own sample text instead of Latin.
Design tools such as Figma and many code editors offer lorem ipsum through plugins or snippets. For HTML templates, the HTML tags option in the generator above wraps each paragraph in a p element, so you can paste it straight into a page.
Placeholder text in other languages
Latin filler is a good neutral default, but it hides problems that real languages bring. German words are much longer, so they overflow narrow buttons and columns. French, Portuguese and Spanish use accents such as é, ç, ã and ñ that need space above and below the line and must exist in your font. Turkish adds letters like ğ, ş and İ.
That is why the tool's Language list offers filler text in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian and Turkish next to classic Latin. These options use everyday words of each language, so your layout is tested with realistic word lengths and letters. For right to left scripts or Asian languages, test with real sample text, because line breaking and font fallback behave differently.
Novelty generators that mix in themed words (food, startups, pirates) can be fun for internal demos, but they make people read the text, which defeats the purpose for client reviews.
The risks of shipping lorem ipsum
Placeholder text that reaches a live site looks careless, and it happens more often than you might think: a search for lorem ipsum dolor sit amet returns many published pages. On a live page it also counts as thin or meaningless content for search engines, it is read aloud by screen readers, and it confuses visitors who use translation tools.
Prevent it with a simple routine before launch: search the site, the content management system and the code for the words lorem and ipsum, check templates, empty states and error messages, and look at meta descriptions and image alt text, which are easy to forget.
Better ways to work with filler text
- Use real content as early as you can. Even a rough draft of the actual text reveals layout problems that filler hides.
- Use filler in the target language when the site is not in English or Latin, so word length and accents are realistic.
- Match the expected length, not just the existence, of text.
- Mark placeholders clearly in documents meant for clients, so nobody approves a page without its real text.
- Keep a launch checklist item that searches for lorem ipsum everywhere.
