Convert M4A to MP3

Convert M4A files, such as iPhone voice memos and audio from Apple apps, into MP3 for players and car radios that do not read M4A.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add audio filesDrop the files; the format is already set.
  2. Adjust qualityChange the quality or choose mono if you need.
  3. DownloadDownload one by one or as a ZIP.

When M4A does not play

M4A is the default audio format on iPhones and Macs: voice memos, GarageBand exports and many downloads use it. Most modern devices play it, but older car radios, some Android apps, set top boxes and upload forms only accept MP3.

The converter decodes the AAC audio inside the M4A and encodes MP3. Voice memos are usually mono; choose Mono and 128 kbit/s to keep them small.

Protected files

Songs bought long ago from iTunes with copy protection cannot be converted; normal M4A files and voice memos work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert iPhone voice memos?

Yes. Share the memo to Files, then choose it here. Mono at 128 kbit/s is enough for speech.

Will M4A to MP3 lose quality?

A little, because both formats are compressed. At 192 kbit/s or higher it is hard to hear.

How good is the MP3 quality?

MP3 files are made with the open source LAME encoder (lame.sourceforge.io). At 192 kbit/s most listeners cannot tell them from the original; choose 256 kbit/s for music archives.

Does converting improve quality?

No. Converting a compressed file to WAV keeps its current quality but cannot restore what was lost.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.

Which input formats work?

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM audio.
