Convert PNG to ICO

Create a favicon or Windows icon from a PNG. One ICO file can hold several sizes at once.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add your PNG filesDrop them onto the page or choose them from your device. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Check the settingsThe output is already set to ICO. You can still change the settings if you need to.
  3. DownloadSave each ICO on its own or get them all at once in a ZIP file.

Why convert PNG to ICO?

Browsers look for favicon.ico on every website, and Windows uses ICO files for program and shortcut icons. One ICO file can contain several sizes, so the system picks the sharpest one for each place.

Start with a square PNG of at least 256 by 256 pixels for the best result.

About PNG

PNG is a lossless format. It keeps every pixel exactly as it is and supports transparent backgrounds, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with text. The downside is size: photos saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

About ICO

ICO is the icon format used for website favicons and Windows icons. A single ICO file can hold several sizes of the same image, so the system can pick the sharpest one for each place.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes should a favicon include?

16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs and bookmarks. Add 256 if the icon will also be used in Windows.

My image is not square. What happens?

It is centered on a square transparent canvas, so it does not get stretched.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Your files are not sent to our servers.

Is there a limit on file size or number of files?

There is no fixed limit. Very large images depend on how much memory your device has, so a phone may struggle with images above about 50 megapixels.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. After you open the page once, it keeps working even if your connection drops, because the conversion runs entirely in your browser.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with a background color. White is the default and you can pick another color in the options.

Which format gives the smallest file?

It depends on the image. After converting, use Find the smallest format: the tool tries WebP, JPG and PNG with your own files and shows which one is smallest.

Can I keep working on the converted files?

Yes. The Next step bar takes your results straight to another conversion without uploading or choosing them again.

Does it work with animated GIFs?

The first frame of an animated GIF is converted as a still image.
