Convert PNG to WebP

Shrink PNG images for the web by converting them to WebP, often to a fraction of the size, with transparency intact.

Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add your PNG filesDrop them onto the page or choose them from your device. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Check the settingsThe output is already set to WebP. You can still change the settings if you need to.
  3. DownloadSave each WebP on its own or get them all at once in a ZIP file.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

WebP supports transparency and strong compression, which makes it a good replacement for PNG on websites. Smaller images load faster and improve page speed scores, and every current browser can show them.

Keep the original PNG if you plan to edit the image later.

About PNG

PNG is a lossless format. It keeps every pixel exactly as it is and supports transparent backgrounds, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with text. The downside is size: photos saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

About WebP

WebP is a modern format made for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency, and its files are usually much smaller than JPG or PNG. All current browsers show WebP, but some older programs and upload forms still do not accept it.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my files get?

It depends on the image. Photos and screenshots often shrink by 50 to 80 percent. Simple graphics with few colors may shrink less.

Which quality setting should I use?

Start with 80 to 90. Go lower for smaller files, or higher if you notice blurry edges or blocky areas.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Your files are not sent to our servers.

Is there a limit on file size or number of files?

There is no fixed limit. Very large images depend on how much memory your device has, so a phone may struggle with images above about 50 megapixels.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. After you open the page once, it keeps working even if your connection drops, because the conversion runs entirely in your browser.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with a background color. White is the default and you can pick another color in the options.

Which format gives the smallest file?

It depends on the image. After converting, use Find the smallest format: the tool tries WebP, JPG and PNG with your own files and shows which one is smallest.

Can I keep working on the converted files?

Yes. The Next step bar takes your results straight to another conversion without uploading or choosing them again.

Does it work with animated GIFs?

The first frame of an animated GIF is converted as a still image.
