Convert GIF to WebP
Convert GIF images to WebP, including animated GIFs: every frame, its timing and the transparency stay as they are, usually in a smaller file.
Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works
Add your GIF filesDrop them onto the page or choose them from your device. You can add as many as you like.
Check the settingsThe output is already set to WebP. You can still change the settings if you need to.
DownloadSave each WebP on its own or get them all at once in a ZIP file.
Animated WebP instead of GIF
WebP can hold animations just like GIF, but with millions of colors instead of 256 and much better compression. Websites that replace GIFs with animated WebP load faster, and every current browser plays them. The converter keeps every frame and its delay, the loop setting and transparent areas, and only stores the part of each frame that changes.
Quality 100 saves the frames losslessly, which keeps every pixel of the GIF exactly. Lower values make the file smaller with a slight loss of detail, which suits animations made from video. Animation size scales the whole animation down to 75, 50 or 25 percent.
Where animated WebP does not work
Some email programs, older image viewers and a few upload forms still do not show animated WebP. Keep the GIF for those, or convert the GIF to MP4 when a platform accepts video. Safari can show WebP but cannot create it, so on iPhone and Mac use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for this conversion.
About GIF
GIF is one of the oldest image formats on the web. It is limited to 256 colors and supports simple on or off transparency and animation. Today it is mostly used for short animations and for compatibility with older systems.
About WebP
WebP is a modern format made for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency, and its files are usually much smaller than JPG or PNG. All current browsers show WebP, but some older programs and upload forms still do not accept it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the animation kept?
Yes. Every frame is converted and keeps its duration, and the WebP loops the same way as the GIF.
Will the WebP be smaller than the GIF?
Usually, especially for GIFs made from video or photos. Very small GIFs with a few flat colors can come out about the same size or slightly larger.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Your files are not sent to our servers.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
There is no fixed limit. Very large images depend on how much memory your device has, so a phone may struggle with images above about 50 megapixels.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes. After you open the page once, it keeps working even if your connection drops, because the conversion runs entirely in your browser.
What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with a background color. White is the default and you can pick another color in the options.
Which format gives the smallest file?
It depends on the image. After converting, use Find the smallest format: the tool tries WebP, JPG and PNG with your own files and shows which one is smallest.
Can I keep working on the converted files?
Yes. The Next step bar takes your results straight to another conversion without uploading or choosing them again.
Does it work with animated GIFs?
Yes. Converting to GIF or WebP keeps every frame and its timing, and you can make the animation smaller with Animation size. For JPG, PNG, BMP and ICO the first frame is saved, or turn on Save every frame as a separate image to get all frames in one ZIP.
